Take Action

#HereForJaneTX is a grassroots action that took place at the Texas Capitol on Friday, May 22, 2015. It is not affiliated or authorized by any organization or politician.

This #HereForJaneTX action, however, is not just a one day event, but part of a continuum of ongoing actions to oppose anti-abortion legislation and increase opportunities to take meaningful action outside the Capitol.

Meaningful action occurs outside the building, in homes, in doctors’ offices and waiting rooms, at small tables in the corners of coffee shops, and sitting on the porch. We must work to effect change at every level.

In that spirit, #HereForJaneTX is part of an ongoing continuum of actions you can take to support access to safe abortion care and to engage in the work of bringing reproductive justice to all Texans.

TAKE ACTION ON MAY 24TH

Help us demonstrate that you’re #HereForJaneTX. The action will take place at 6 PM outside the Senate Chamber. We’ll be there to take a group picture and share abortion stories from the perspective of “Janes.” From there, we’ll move to the Senate Gallery where we will sit in solidarity to remind members of the legislature that we will not yield. That we will be watching.

Talk With People About Abortion

Conversation about abortion, and the complexities of reproductive health and justice, can reduce the stigma often associated with abortion. When people hear stories about the decisions people they know have made about abortion, it breaks down barriers and builds up respect for different choices. Learn more about starting these conversations and breaking down stigma using these resources.

Learn To Work in a Reproductive Justice Framework

SisterSong – Women of Color Reproductive Justice Collective, explains the meaning of this term, coined as part of their activism and organizing:

The reproductive justice framework – the right to have children, not have children, and to parent the children we have in safe and healthy environments — is based on the human right to make personal decisions about one’s life, and the obligation of government and society to ensure that the conditions are suitable for implementing one’s decisions is important for women of color.

The reproductive justice framework provides a context for talking about Janes, about abortion, about access, and about respect that can shape and change the conversations we need to be having.
